England

The lack of wickets in the middle overs is something that has hurt England ever since the ODI world cup. The team has chosen to move away from Liam Plunkett, who was so good in that role and does not have a great replacement ready.

The first match is a perfect example of how this is making life difficult for England. Australia was 123 for 5 in 23.4 overs but England could not get another breakthrough till the 44th over by which time the score had improved to 249.

There was not much resistance from Australia after that wicket fell and just showed what an opportunity England let go. The form of its opening bowlers, especially the pace of Jofra Archer, was impressive and is going to test Australia again.

Adil Rashid is a real force in the middle-overs as well. Moeen Ali had a rough game and has been struggling with his bowling for quite some time now. He is not currently good enough to be playing as a fifth bowler especially when England has no other part-timers to turn to.

England’s batting is deep and very powerful. Bairstow and Billings mounted an excellent counter-attack in the previous match against Australia. We can expect some more contributions from Roy, Buttler, and Morgan in this match which should help England quite a lot.

Australia

A brilliant spell of bowling from Josh Hazelwood set the scene for Australia’s victory in our opinion. Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell batted well to get Australia to 294 but that is a very chase-able total in England.

Australia seems to be struggling to be able to keep up with England at the moment. They are unlikely to have Steve Smith available to them for this match or even the final one and so their batting is compromised.

David Warner is struggling for form, Aaron Finch looks close to getting out at all times, and Alex Carey looks out of place. Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, and Glenn Maxwell are leading the charge for Australia at the moment.

The Australia batting is strong but it is nowhere near as dangerous as England’s. The current form

of the Aussie players looks pretty poor as well.

Where Australia matches England (and is even slightly better) is the bowling. Josh Hazelwood is bowling beautifully while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Adam Zampa are asking tough questions as well. Zampa is constantly under attack from the England players but he comes coming back at them.

Add Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Marsh to the mix and Australia has seven good bowling options at its disposal. That is a far more flexible bowling attack than England’s and is going to keep them in the contest at all times.

ENG vs AUS Toss Prediction

England’s two defeats have both come batting second so far, but captains of all sides have tended to prefer to bowl first if the mid-morning English conditions suit. Eoin Morgan could choose to do just that.
